4 Ways to Tell Your Feet You Love Them
Did you know that Friday, August 17th is National I Love My Feet Day? At NY Foot Health that’s a celebration we can get behind wholeheartedly! Below are four ways that we believe patients can improve foot health and work to prevent some common podiatric conditions:
1. Eat Healthily—you may wonder what food has to do with your feet. Every pound you gain adds anywhere from 3-5 times the stress on your feet and ankles when you walk or run. That’s why the gain or loss of even a few pounds can make a big difference to your feet. Part of the goals of the New York State Podiatric Medical Association is community education and we offer a program on obesity prevention. A healthy diet that limits sweets, fats and processed foods and focuses on lean protein, fruits and vegetables can also help prevent diabetes and decrease inflammation—two conditions that can play an important role in foot disorders.
2. Exercise Regularly—a fitness regimen goes hand in hand with a healthy eating plan. Exercise can help you maintain (or attain) a healthy weight. It’s also great for flexibility and range of motion. Some exercise regimens can also improve balance—a good preventative strategy for avoiding falls.
3. Choose Supportive Shoes—wearing shoes with good ankle and arch support will go a long way to preventing heel pain, chronic ankle instability, flat feet and a host of other podiatric problems. Be sure to get professionally measured and buy shoes that fit your feet properly. Avoid going barefoot and limit the time spent in flip-flops to around the pool or gym, as these shoes have no support or protection.
4. Practice Good Foot Habits—a small time investment on a few good foot care habits can have a big payoff when it comes to the condition of your feet. Wash your feet daily and dry completely. Apply sunscreen when feet will be exposed. Use foot powder to help keep feet dry and a rich moisturizer to prevent dry skin and heel cracks. Inspect your feet regularly for changes or abnormalities and report anything concerning to your podiatrist promptly. Don’t have a podiatrist? We can help you find one through our online directory.
Your feet will be grateful for the care you show them and reward you with many years of taking you where you want to go. To learn more about foot care, subscribe to our free e-newsletter or contact us.
