Dealing with Sweaty Feet

At NY Foot Health, we know everyone’s feet get overheated and sweaty now and then, but for some patients this is a chronic and potentially embarrassing problem. Although rare, there is a medical condition known as hyperhidrosis that causes excessive sweating of the feet and hands. It’s seen more often in men than women and is more common in young adults than older ones.

Beyond Perspiration

Although sweaty feet may not seem like a major problem, they can be the cause of considerable stress, particularly in teenagers who are self-conscious about their bodies. Patients with hyperhidrosis usually have strong, foul foot odor as well, and may be more prone to fungal infections. The appearance of their feet may be whitish and wet, the way your skin would look if you soaked for too many hours in the tub. All of these symptoms can result in anxiety and isolation.

Depending on the severity of your hyperhidrosis, the foot doctor may recommend over-the-counter or prescription roll-on antiperspirants. Botox injections can also be used to control sweating temporarily—generally lasts for about six to nine months. Oral medications and, in severe cases, a surgical procedure that interrupts the nerve signals that tell the body to sweat excessively, may also be recommended.

Practice Good Foot Hygiene

Having a good foot care regimen can help all patients reduce the fall out from sweaty feet and lower the risk of fungal infections. It’s important to wash your feet daily with soap and water. Dry feet completely and apply cornstarch, or some kind of foot or antifungal powder.

Another way to help with sweaty feet is by choosing socks that draw moisture away from the skin. There are several brands made of natural or acrylic fibers that are designed to keep your feet dry. Avoid one hundred percent cotton socks. While very absorbent, they do no nothing to wick moisture away from your skin and frequently result in blisters. If you notice that your socks feel damp, change them. Keep an extra pair of socks at school or work if you tend to sweat profusely.
