Weight Loss Improves Foot Health
At NY Foot Health, we know there is an important correlation between your weight and the health of your feet and ankles. Being obese or overweight can result in one or more of the following foot problems:
Flatfeet or fallen arches
Gout
In addition, carrying extra pounds can increase your risk for heart disease, hypertension and diabetes—serious conditions which can also negatively impact the condition of your feet. If you believe that you have a foot or ankle condition that is caused or exacerbated by being overweight, consult your podiatrist on the best treatment plan for you. Don’t have a podiatrist? Use our online directory to locate a qualified foot doctor in your area.
Small Changes, Big Results
Whether you have a large or small amount of weight to lose, focus on small changes that you can live with rather than going for the quick loss through drastic measures, you’re not likely to keep up. Below are some suggestions for ways to eat healthier and lose weight.
Focus on portion control. Rather than depriving yourself of a favorite food entirely, try to stick to the recommended portion. Check the package to see how many potato chips, cookies, etc. are considered a portion and then take that amount out and seal up the bag.
Use a smaller plate. It may seem overly obvious, but if you use a smaller plate for your meal, you will definitely have less food on it. No seconds!
Increase your steps. Find little ways to increase your physical activity: park farther away from your office or stores, get off the subway one stop early, make multiple trips up the stairs rather than taking everything up at once.
Compare products. Read labels to find out the calories, fat content and grams of sugar in the foods you buy. Oftentimes another brand of the same type of food will be a better nutritional value.
Prep healthy snacks. Wash and cut vegetables ahead of time so they are ready to grab when a snack attack hits. Keep plenty of fruit, nuts, yogurt and other nutritious foods available to fill in between meals.
