February is American Heart Month, and at NY Foot Health, we know that heart disease can be very detrimental to your feet as well as your overall health. One area of particular concern is hypertension or high blood pressure.

Harm from Hypertension

Elevated blood pressure is often related to atherosclerosis, a buildup of plaque in your blood vessels, which is associated with high levels of “bad” cholesterol in your blood. This buildup narrows the arteries making your heart have to work harder to get the blood through, and decreasing circulation in your legs and feet and can result in peripheral arterial disease (PAD). Patients with these conditions may experience pain and discomfort in their lower legs and feet, neuropathy, and open sores that are very difficult to heal and may lead to infections and—worst case scenario--amputations. If you have not yet been diagnosed with hypertension, look for potential signs of this disease in your legs and feet. They may include:

  • Loss of hair on your legs and toes

  • Cramping

  • Discoloration of the skin

  • Sores

  • Changes in temperature of your feet

If you notice any of these symptoms, contact your podiatrist right away to get them evaluated. If you need to find a podiatrist in your area, use our online directory.

De-Stress to Reduce Your Risk

In addition to a healthy diet and regular exercise, one important way to lower your risk for high blood pressure is by cultivating habits that reduce stress. Below are some suggestions:

  • Get Organized—use lists to help you prioritize what you have to do and then make a plan to get it accomplished.

  • Manage Your Time—be realistic about how long it takes to complete tasks and don’t overbook yourself. No rushing!

  • Sleep More—aim to get 6-8 hours a night of good sleep.

  • Stay Connected—make time daily to talk with friends and family.

  • Give Back—helping others takes your mind off your stress and benefits you as you benefit others.

At NY Foot Health, we believe in a total body approach to healthcare. If you have questions about other medical conditions and how they affect your feet, contact us.
