4 Pediatric Conditions that Orthotics May Help
Adults aren’t the only ones that develop foot problems that custom orthotics can fix. At NY Foot Health, we want parents to recognize common podiatric issues their children might be experiencing and how custom orthotics can help relieve them and prevent worse conditions as they grow and mature. Below are four common pediatric foot disorders for which your podiatrist may prescribe orthotics.
Flat Feet—during the first year of life, all children appear to have flat feet—in other words, no space between the arch of their foot and the floor when standing. After their first birthday, however, you should notice an arch when your child is standing. If you don’t detect one or your child seems tired and cranky after a period of walking, it is important to let the podiatrist examine your child’s feet. Orthotics can correct flat feet in developing children and help them avoid foot pain as adults.
Sever’s Disease—if your youngster is a sports enthusiast and complains of heel pain, Sever’s may be the cause. The discomfort stems from a still-developing growth plate at the back of the heel, which leaves a vulnerable area that can become inflamed from overuse or an injury. Sever’s most often affects children between the ages of 8-15. Orthotics can provide heel support and take the pressure of the affected area.
In Toeing—orthotics can help correct biomechanical defects. Children who display in-toeing have metatarsal bones aligned abnormally and are often related to the baby’s position in the mother’s womb. Prescribed orthotics often help reverse in-toeing and are particularly effective during the first five years of a child’s life when bones are still developing.
Shin Splints—sports injury common among young athletes is shin splints. Its telltale signs are pain and soreness in the front of the leg, usually experienced at the start of an activity or after exercise. Orthotics can help decrease the risk of this problem in combination with resting from the activity causing the pain and proper stretching.
Like adults, pediatric orthotics are made from a mold of your child’s unique feet to address their foot disorder. Your podiatrist will evaluate your child’s feet and custom fit them with orthotics if beneficial. Need to find a foot doctor in your area? Use our online directory. As your child’s foot grows, orthotics will need to be replaced to keep up with their growth.
