Size Matters When It Comes to Shoes
At NY Foot Health, we are committed to helping New Yorkers be proactive about their podiatric health. One of the best and simplest ways to prevent foot pain and many common disorders is wearing the correct shoe size. You may be surprised to learn that it’s estimated as many as 80 to 90% of people are wearing shoes that don’t fit properly. Consequences to your feet, as a result, can include:
· Blisters
· Bunions
Beyond these specific conditions, however, wearing shoes that don’t fit properly can lead you to be less active. It can reduce the amount of time you’re on your feet, creating a downward trend for your fitness level as well. If the shoe doesn’t fit, you don’t want to wear it.
Recognizing National Measure Your Feet Day
January 23rd is National Measure Your Feet Day and a great time to get your feet professionally measured to ensure your shoes fit correctly. A reputable footwear store should be able to do this for you. Below are some additional tips to help you get the right shoes for your feet.
Talk to your podiatrist—the foot doctor can recommend shoe styles that will best accommodate any foot problems you have, such as a toe deformity or flat feet. They may also prescribe a custom orthotic to help correct a foot disorder that you should bring with you when trying on new shoes to make sure it fits comfortably in your footwear. Don’t currently have a podiatrist? Use our online directory to find one near you.
Plan your shopping trip—schedule a time late in the day to shop for shoes. It is when your feet are at their largest. Remember to wear or bring the same type of socks you will wear with the shoes you are looking to purchase.
Match your shoes to your activity—don’t assume that the size and fit for dress shoes will be the same for your athletic footwear. You should buy shoes designed specifically for the sport or exercise program you do and get those professionally fitted as well. It will improve performance and help prevent injuries.
