Help Your Podiatrist Help You

Each October we celebrate International Podiatry Day. At NY Foot Health, we want to help patients make the most of their health partnership with the podiatrist. Your doctor of podiatric medicine (that’s what the DPM stands for after your podiatrist’s name) has been specially trained through years of medical school and residencies to treat all conditions associated with your ankles and feet. From screening and diagnosing to treating and prescribing therapies and medical equipment, the podiatrist can help you live a healthy and active life. You can maximize those benefits by preparing properly for your next visit.

Before You Go

Spending a short amount of time gathering some helpful items will make your visit with the podiatrist more productive. Bring the following with you:

  • Any questions about your feet and any problems or symptoms you are experiencing

  • A list of any medical conditions you currently have and medications and supplements you are taking

  • A pair of shoes you wear regularly—their wear pattern may provide clues to the podiatrist about your feet. If you have foot or ankle discomfort when exercising or walking, bring the shoes you use for exercise/walking.

It’s also a good idea to check with your health insurance company to see if a referral is needed to see the podiatrist. If you have any special needs or wish to bring someone with you to your appointment, just give the podiatrist’s office a call and let them know.

With The Foot Doctor

Be open with the foot doctor about your podiatric and other health care issues. Don’t be afraid to ask questions! Be sure to do the following:

  • Let the podiatrist know if you have any allergies or have had an adverse reaction to any medication in the past.

  • Make sure you are clear on the diagnosis the foot doctor gives you and the treatment plan. If something seems unclear to you ask the podiatrist to explain it again.

  • Find out what the follow-up should be for your condition.

Post-Visit

Follow the podiatrist’s instructions for treatment. If any part of the plan causes you pain, discomfort or other side effects let the podiatrist know asap. Also:

  • Schedule any tests the podiatrist orders and follow-up appointments if needed.

  • Call the podiatrist’s office to ask about your test results if you haven’t received them in the specified amount of time.

  • Contact the podiatrist with any questions or to report any new or worsening symptoms associated with your feet.
