At NY Foot Health, we know that home school is in session throughout the state until the coronavirus is contained. Although most schools are providing distance learning materials, you’ll likely find you still have many hours a day to fill. We’d like to propose a fun and informative session for your children all about feet.

Start by wowing your children with this fact: the average person walks approximately 115,000 miles in their lifetime. That’s equal to walking around the entire earth 4 times!

Now that you’ve got their attention, let them have fun guessing the answers to the following questions (see answer key at the end). Have raisins, dimes or some other small treat to give out as prizes for right answers.

Foot Fact Fill In’s

  1. Each of your feet contain __________ bones, ____________ joints, _____________ ligaments and ___________ muscles.

  2. A pair of feet have _______________ sweat glands and can produce up to ________ of perspiration in a day.

  3. Your ____________ are the single biggest cause of foot problems.

  4. Who walks more, women or men? ______________

  5. _____________ is the most common sports injury.

  6. _______________ taste with their feet.

  7. Your feet are at their biggest in the _________________.

  8. An estimated ___________% of Americans will develop foot or ankle problems at some point during their life.

And that’s why you want to practice healthy habits now to protect your feet as you grow. You can end your lesson by teaching your children some important ways they can take care of their feet:

  • Wash your feet every day with soap and water.

  • Never put on socks if your feet are still wet (it leads to fungal infections like athlete’s foot—yuck!)

  • Tell mom or dad if your shoes feel too tight.

  • Don’t share socks, shoes or other items that touch someone else’s feet.

  • Avoid peeling and picking at toenails so you don’t get an ingrown nail.
