Foot Fatigue Part of Post-Shutdown Fallout

As the state continues to re-open, we at NY Foot Health are hearing about an increase in the number of patients experiencing pain, aches, weakness, and tiredness in their feet and legs. Foot fatigue is what happens after you suddenly become physically active after a long period of inactivity. In other words, going back to work, shopping, and other appointments and activities after 3 months of staying home.

Abnormalities in foot structure can contribute to foot fatigue. If you have an overly high arch or flat feet, this puts extra strain on your arch, which in turn can inflame the plantar fascia and lead to feelings of tiredness and/or pain in the arch or heel. Since foot fatigue can point to a more significant podiatric problem, it’s best to get it evaluated by a doctor of podiatric medicine. Home Care for Hurting Feet

There are several steps you can take to help reduce the discomfort of foot fatigue.

  • Take breaks throughout your day to rest, and if possible, elevate your feet.

  • Ice and massage feet at the end of the day.

  • Check your shoes. Shoes that are worn down in the heel or have compacted insoles or other damage can lead to foot pain.

  • Ask your podiatrist about custom orthotics or over the counter products that may relieve your symptoms.

  • Get to and maintain a healthy weight. Extra pounds mean extra stress for your feet. If during the stay at home phase of the virus you put on some weight due to stress or boredom eating, you’re not alone! Now’s the time to start re-focusing on healthy eating and resuming regular exercise to get your weight back to where it should be.
