5 Ways to Keep Your Feet Safe this Summer
At NY Foot Health, we are happy to see our state opening up once again, and while there may need to be precautions in place, at least New Yorkers can begin to enjoy the summer season. Everyone’s more than ready for sun and fun, and we want to make sure that a foot injury or other disorder doesn’t stand in your way. Below are five suggestions for protecting your feet while enjoying summer activities.
Be generous with sunscreen. If you’re wearing sandals or other open-style shoes, it’s necessary to apply sunscreen even for short stints outside. Your skin can sustain a burn very quickly, especially during peak sun hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. When you’re at the beach or poolside, remember to reapply every time you go into the water.
Keep feet covered. Although it’s tempting to kick off your shoes in the summertime, sharp objects can be lurking in grass or beach sand. The risk of a puncture wound can be greatly reduced by wearing shoes outside.
Match your shoes with your activity. Flip-flops are not designed for volleyball or long walks. For physically strenuous activities, choose an athletic shoe to avoid ankle sprains and other injuries. If you’re hitting the hiking trails, use boots or shoes designed for hiking. Wearing the right shoes for fitness and active play will protect feet from injuries.
Carry moleskin in your bag. Sweat increases friction between the skin on your feet and your footwear. A small piece of moleskin applied to a spot that’s becoming irritated can prevent a blister from forming and save the day.
Use flip-flops in public places. To avoid fungal infections--which are spread by direct contact—don’t walk bare foot in restrooms, communal showers, town pools, or any other moist places that many people tend to walk on. You should also avoid sharing shoes, towels, nail clippers, or any other objects that touch someone else’s feet.
If you injure your foot or ankle or you notice any unusual changes in your feet, consult your podiatrist. Don’t have one? You can find one in your area using our online directory. For more information on taking care of your feet, contact us and subscribe to our free e-newsletter.
