Treat Ankle Sprains Promptly

It can happen in an instance—you’re rounding third base in the family softball game or simply walking on a sandy beach, when suddenly your ankle twists and your feel intense pain. At NY Foot Health, we know ankle sprains require immediate medical attention. Here’s why:

  • An ankle sprain left untreated can lead to future sprains, chronic ankle instability and leg weakness.

  • Another potentially even more serious injury may have occurred at the time of the sprain that will also require treatment. Most often this would be some type of fracture.

Signs of a Sprain

How do you know if your ankle is sprained? Common symptoms include:

  • Pain

  • Swelling

  • Bruising

  • Difficulty walking on the affected foot

However, just because you can walk on it does not mean the ankle isn’t sprained. In addition, it’s not uncommon for the pain and discomfort to decrease after the first 24 hours, which also misleads many patients to think that a sprain did not occur. Until it’s time for your appointment, care for your ankle at home following the RICE regimen:

REST—stay off the injured ankle until you are examined by the foot doctor. Continued activity can make the sprain worse or cause a secondary injury.

ICE—apply ice to the site of the injury as soon as possible. Keep ice on for 15-20 minutes and repeat every three to four hours. This will help decrease inflammation.

COMPRESSION—snugly wrap an elastic bandage around your ankle. Do not make it so tight it cuts off your circulation.

ELEVATION—put your foot up on a couple of pillows, ideally in a position higher than your heart. This will reduce swelling.
