3 Steps to Successful Shoe Shopping for Kids
There’s no doubt a lot has changed this year about the back-to-school season, but at NY Foot Health, we know one thing that remains the same is the need for good quality, properly fitting shoes for your children to keep their developing feet growing healthy and strong. We want to help take the hassle out of the shopping trip. Below are three areas to focus on to ensure you get the right shoes for your youngster’s feet.
Foot Health—Before visiting the shoe store, it’s a good idea to bring your child to the podiatrist for a checkup. (Don’t currently have a podiatrist? We can help you locate one in your area using our online directory.) If your child sustained a foot or ankle injury over the summer, it’s important for the foot doctor to make sure the injury has fully healed. The podiatrist may also make recommendations about shoe features that will work best if your child has ongoing issues such as flat feet, Sever’s disease, or a tendency for ingrown toenails.
Fit—The next step is determining your child’s correct shoe size and buying shoes that will fit comfortably. Time your shopping trip so you go towards the end of the day—that’s when feet are at their largest. Get both feet measured professionally. Even once you know your child’s size, it’s essential they try on any shoes you’re are considering and spend some time in the store walking around in them. Shoes should feel comfortable from the moment of purchase.
Features—Finally—and this may be the trickiest part—take a good look at the shoes your children like and make sure they meet the criteria for good quality and design. Shoes should protect feet by offering adequate arch support, no-slip treads, firm heel counters, and cushioning in the heel and insole. Don’t allow a fashion fad to override function, or your child may end up with foot pain.
