Foot Health 101
It’s back to school time, and at NY Foot Health, we think this is the perfect time to offer a refresher course on how to take care of your feet. So many common and not-so-common podiatric problems can be prevented by being proactive about the health of your feet and ankles. Get schooled with the tips below:
Keep it clean. One of the easiest and best ways to care for your feet is simply to wash them every day with soap and water. It helps remove germs and bacteria that the skin on your feet may have come in contact with. Be sure to dry feet thoroughly, especially between the toes, to help prevent athlete’s foot from developing.
Pass the exam. There’s no substitute for a professional podiatric exam, but between checkups, it’s a good idea to inspect your feet for any unusual changes periodically. If you notice swelling, toes that seem to be moving out of place, discoloration of your skin or toenails, or anything else suspicious, be sure to ask your podiatrist about it. Don’t currently have a podiatrist? Use our online directory to find one near you.
Don’t share. Although that’s not something you’ll learn in kindergarten, it’s sound advice when it comes to your feet. Direct contact spreads fungal infections. Borrowing other people’s shoes, nail clippers, or emery boards increases your risk of getting a foot infection.
Get the right shoe for the job. Today’s design of athletic shoes accommodates the foot movements required by specific sports. If you’re a serious athlete, invest in quality sport’s shoes. It will help prevent sports injuries and may even improve your performance.
Pay attention to pain. If your feet hurt, they’re trying to tell you that something is wrong. Don’t continue with an activity that’s causing pain and get your discomfort evaluated by the foot doctor promptly. Most conditions are best treated when diagnosed in the early stages.
