6 Tips for Seniors to Prevent Winter Falls
At NY Foot Health, we know falls are always a concern for seniors’ citizens. Add some slippery winter weather into the picture, however, and the risk increases significantly. There’s no need to fear going out, however, if you take the precautions listed here.
1. Take care of foot pain promptly. At any time of year, foot pain can cause you to change the way you walk, leading to a fall. Don’t put off getting discomfort evaluated and treated. If you need to find a podiatrist in your area, use our online directory to locate one in your community.
2. Weatherproof your footwear. Be sure you wear boots or shoes with low, wide heels and a non-slip tread if you must navigate slushy or icy surfaces.
3. Keep a clear line of sight. Don’t carry multiple bags and packages when you’re walking outside. It will impede your ability to see the path in front of you or changes in height like a curb. You also want to have your arms free to help with balance or grab onto something if you start to slip.
4. Carry a little litter. It’s easy to pack a bit of extra insurance by keeping a sealed sandwich bag in your pocket with some cat litter or sand in it. If you come to a patch that looks shiny and there’s no way around it, pour out the litter to give you some traction.
5. Don’t rush. Plan some extra time into your schedule so that you’re not racing to get where you’re going. Haste not only makes waste, but it also increases the chances that you will not be paying close attention to where you’re walking and slip.
6. Exercise for better balance. Many exercises can help improve balance. Two to try:
Stand on One Leg: hold onto a sturdy chair (one that does not have wheels) and pick up one leg. Let go of the chair and hold the position for as long as you can. Try to work up to one minute for each leg.
March On: Marching in place is a simple and effective way to build better balance. Lift your left leg as high as you can and then lower and lift your right leg as high as you can. Repeat 20 times. Stand in front of a counter if you are not steady.
