Avoid Foot Infection Hot Spots this Summer
At NY Foot Health, we know the temperatures aren’t the only things heating up during the summer months. Opportunities for foot infections abound this season. Bacteria, fungi, and viruses that cause uncomfortable conditions like athlete’s foot, warts, and toenail fungus are lurking. Find out where and what you can do to prevent them from attacking your family’s feet.
Pool and Beach—The first thing to know about the agents that cause foot infections is they spread by direct contact. Many people tend to walk barefoot at the pool and beach, making it a high-risk zone for contracting an infection. Keep your flip-flops on when walking around the pool deck, going to the restroom, and in changing areas.
Nail Salon—It’s the season for showing off pretty painted toes, but the nail salon can be another hotbed of infectious agents. The salon you go to must follow proper sanitizing procedures for foot baths and clippers, cuticle trimmers, and other items used for your pedicure. You can reduce your risk by bringing your pedicure tools, wearing flip-flops at the salon, and ensuring the salon you use is clean has the appropriate cosmetology/health license.
Your Shoes—Fungal infections thrive in dark, damp places. With the mercury climbing, your feet may sweat more. Leaving them trapped inside your shoes gives fungi just the chance they need to develop and grow. Wear shoes made of breathable materials and alternate pairs if possible. Use talcum or antifungal powder on your feet and keep an extra pair of socks handy to change into when you notice your feet feel moist.
While over-the-counter medications exist to treat some foot infections, they can also harm your feet if not used correctly. Your best bet for the quickest relief is to visit your podiatrist. The foot doctor will determine the specific type of infection you have and the best treatment for you. Do you need to find a podiatrist near you?
