Plan for a Foot-Healthy Vacation
At NY Foot Health, we know many of our patients can’t wait to take a vacation this summer, especially since most of us missed last year’s! And, while you may not be thinking about your feet as you make your plans, podiatric pain or injury can sideline your trip in a hurry. Below are some tips to ensure your vacation is foot-pain-free.
Think comfortable for travel day. The day you’re heading out requires a tried-and-true pair of shoes that you know will feel good all day. If you’re traveling by plane, you will want to pick a pair you wear with socks as you’ll most likely have to walk without shoes through the airport security machine and don’t want to start your trip by picking up a fungal infection along the way!
Stop and stretch. Whatever mode of transportation you’re traveling by, be sure to take breaks along the way to stand, stretch and walk a bit if possible. Sitting in one position for a long time impedes circulation and can leave you feeling stiff and cause your feet to swell.
Match your shoes to your itinerary. If your vacation plans include active pursuits like tennis or hiking, be sure to bring the appropriate footwear to prevent sprains and other injuries. Don’t try to save on luggage space by expecting a pair of sandals to suffice for sports or fitness activities.
Pack podiatric essentials. Small items can make a big difference in your foot health and comfort. Bring moleskin in case of blisters, nail clippers and emery board, foot powder, an ace bandage, and a mini first aid kit with bandages and antibacterial ointment to treat small cuts.
Don’t forget your orthotic. Foot pain doesn’t take a holiday. If your foot doctor has prescribed an orthotic to wear in your shoes, be sure to bring it.
Treat foot problems before you go. If you’ve been experiencing any foot pain or other unusual symptoms, make an appointment with your podiatrist before going on vacation to get them checked out.
