Celebrating Healthy Aging Month
September is for seniors, and here at NY Foot Health, we want to help our older patients get the most out of life. Adopting healthy lifestyle habits can help you avoid health issues and increase your enjoyment of daily life.
Stay Ahead of Foot Problems
When it comes to podiatric care, there are several ways seniors can ensure good foot and ankle health now and into the future:
Establish a foot care regimen and stick with it. It doesn’t have to be arduous or time-consuming. Simply washing your feet daily, applying an anti-fungal or other foot powder in the morning, and a rich moisturizer at night before bed cover the bases for good foot hygiene.
Examine your feet regularly. Look your feet over top, bottom, and between your toes. If it’s too hard to see your whole foot, ask someone to help you. Report any changes or concerning symptoms such as lumps, bruising, discoloration, swelling, changes in toenails, or rashes to your podiatrist promptly. If you don’t have a podiatrist currently, getting one is another way to be good to your feet. Our online directory can help you find a foot doctor near you.
Wear good quality shoes that fit correctly. It is one of the best ways to protect the health of your feet. Make sure the footwear you choose has good arch support, cushioning in the insole, and a no-slip tread to minimize the risk of falls.
Other Healthy Aging Tips
Take a positive approach to aging by focusing on all that you can do and new avenues you’ve yet to explore. A few suggestions:
Try a new fitness or exercise activity. Use it or lose it is an age-old maxim. Physical activity has many benefits, from weight maintenance and reducing blood pressure to improving mood and fighting diseases such as diabetes, arthritis, and heart disease. Make fitness social by planning fun physical activities with friends and family. Explore new hiking or biking trails, for example, or take a dance class. Try a new app that tracks your exercise for added motivation.
Give back. Find a way to use your talents and life experiences to help others.
Go for it. What’s something you’ve always wanted to do? Do some research. Make a plan and see what’s possible.
