Out with the Old, In with the New
At NY Foot Health, we know that New Year’s is a time for reflection and resolutions for self-improvement. We’d like to suggest getting rid of some bad habits and adding some positive ones to improve your podiatric health.
Say Goodbye to:
High, spiky heels with narrow, pointed toe boxes. While fun and pretty to wear now, these types of shoes cause significant harm to feet and can result in bunions, hammertoes, and other painful foot conditions down the road. If you can’t go “cold turkey,” at least resolve to limit the time spent in these styles.
Walking barefoot around the house. Yes, we’ve all been spending an above-average amount of time at home and often in slippers or barefoot. It leaves your arches unsupported and can aggravate the plantar fascia, causing heel pain.
Wearing socks for more than one day!
Picking at your toenails. It dramatically increases your risk for ingrown toenails.
Say Welcome to:
Creating—and sticking with—a simple foot hygiene regimen: wash feet every day with soap and water and dry thoroughly. Sprinkle with foot powder in the a.m. before getting dressed and end the day with a soothing foot massage with an emollient moisturizer.
Getting fitted by a professional for a new pair of shoes. Foot size can change as you age, and many people are wearing shoes that are too small for their feet. Resolve to look for styles that are attractive and good for your feet.
Listening to your feet—when they hurt, take a break, and put them up. If you have persistent pain or discomfort, don’t wait—make an appointment with your podiatrist promptly to have it evaluated and treated. Don’t have a podiatrist? Use our online directory to locate one near you.
